Antique Spanish Painted Storage Chest with Moorish Influence

Late 18th – Early 19th Century.

This is probably a later copy of the 16th-century coffer appearing in Arthur Byrne's Spanish Interiors.

This Spanish painted chest dates from the late 18th to early 19th century and reflects the rich decorative traditions of provincial Spain. Constructed in solid timber and retaining much of its original painted surface, the chest displays bold polychrome decoration with clear Moorish and Islamic influence. Pieces of this type were both practical household storage and important decorative furniture within Spanish homes, combining robust craftsmanship with striking surface ornament.

The front of the chest features a beautifully aged painted panel with geometric and stylised motifs in deep red, blue, and golden ochre tones. The design has a strong visual presence and shows clear influence from Islamic decorative traditions that were absorbed into Spanish art and furniture making over centuries. This blend of Spanish provincial craftsmanship with Moorish artistic influence gives the piece a distinctive character that collectors and interior designers value today.

At the centre is an impressive hand-forged iron lock plate and hasp, providing both security and decorative impact. Spanish furniture of the period often incorporated elaborate ironwork, produced by local blacksmiths and designed to emphasise strength and durability. The long vertical lock plate seen on this chest is typical of historic Iberian storage chests and contributes significantly to its bold appearance.

History of the Spanish Painted Chest

The Spanish painted chest was one of the most common pieces of furniture in provincial homes from the 17th through the early 19th century. These chests served as storage for clothing, linens, textiles, and personal valuables. Their solid construction allowed them to endure generations of use, while decorative painting provided an opportunity for regional craftsmen to express local artistic traditions.

In rural areas of Spain, painted furniture became particularly popular because it allowed simple timber construction to be transformed into colourful and visually striking household pieces. The layered pigments seen on this chest have softened with time, creating the warm patina and authentic character that only genuine antique surfaces develop.

Moorish Influence in Spanish Furniture

The decoration on this Spanish painted chest reflects the long-standing influence of Moorish and Islamic art on Spanish design. For centuries, Islamic artistic traditions shaped architecture, ceramics, textiles, and furniture throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Geometric ornament, vibrant colour palettes, and rhythmic decorative patterns were absorbed into Spanish craftsmanship and remained influential well into the 18th and 19th centuries.

The painted panel on this chest shows this cross-cultural influence clearly, with decorative motifs that echo patterns seen in traditional Moroccan and Andalusian design.

Character and Interior Appeal

Today this Spanish painted chest works equally well as both functional storage and decorative furniture. Its strong colour palette and historic patina make it ideal for interiors seeking warmth, character, and authenticity.

Pieces like this sit beautifully in:

  • Mediterranean interiors

  • rustic country houses

  • Spanish or Moroccan-inspired rooms

  • eclectic or bohemian spaces

  • antique-led interior design schemes

Its robust construction and striking painted decoration make it a genuine statement piece that brings centuries of history and craftsmanship into a modern home.

Almost good enough
Color: E-Navy+Purple
My dog chewy can rip through anything, even these. I do love the toys they’re great. They’re made with coconut on the inside, but could somebody please!, make a chew toy worthy of my dogs teeth, cause this ain’t it. But it is the strongest so far . I would recommend it. My doodle chewy short for Chewbacca is insane about chewing.

Could be more durable.
Color: A-Navy
It’s not as durable as I’d hoped. I’ve had to mend it. It’s cute, though, and my dog likes it. He’s an Aussie, so not great bite strength.

Cute but disappointing
Color: C-Navy+Oak, Color: C-Navy+Oak
One of my dogs love these however they are far from indestructible. Two days after giving the teddy to him, the tail of the teddy is off and there is a rip by one of the arms. They are very cute teddies but not for heavy chewers as they will only last a few days.

Nothing is indestructible
Color: D-Purple
Adorable. Looks just like the photo. My 15# JRT loves it! however the tail and one ear were gone in a matter of minutes. It’s his toy so I’m just monitoring his time with it as it’s his favorite 😍

Our Pit Bull’s Favorite Toy!
Color: A-Navy, Color: A-Navy
We absolutely love this MAXBECK bear toy! We’ve ordered it 4 times over the last 8 months because our senior pit bull is obsessed with his “babies.” He always has one close to him and even cuddles with them. The material is very sturdy and holds up amazingly well even with rough play. My dog’s favorite part is the squeaker. What I love most is that even after he finally tears into it, the rope built inside becomes a whole second toy for him and keeps the fun going. If you have a heavy chewer who destroys toys quickly, this one is definitely worth trying!
