The idea of human cruelty to animals so consumes novelist Elizabeth Costello in her later years that she can no longer look another person in the eye: humans, especially meat-eating ones, seem to her to be conspirators in a crime of stupefying magnitude taking place on farms and in slaughterhouses, factories, and laboratories across the world.

Costello's son, a physics professor, admires her literary achievements, but dreads his mother's lecturing on animal rights at the college where he teaches. His colleagues resist her argument that human reason is overrated and that the inability to reason does not diminish the value of life; his wife denounces his mother's vegetarianism as a form of moral superiority.

At the dinner that follows her first lecture, the guests confront Costello with a range of sympathetic and skeptical reactions to issues of animal rights, touching on broad philosophical, anthropological, and religious perspectives. Painfully for her son, Elizabeth Costello seems offensive and flaky, but--dare he admit it?--strangely on target.

In this landmark book, Nobel Prize-winning writer J. M. Coetzee uses fiction to present a powerfully moving discussion of animal rights in all their complexity. He draws us into Elizabeth Costello's own sense of mortality, her compassion for animals, and her alienation from humans, even from her own family. In his fable, presented as a Tanner Lecture sponsored by the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University, Coetzee immerses us in a drama reflecting the real-life situation at hand: a writer delivering a lecture on an emotionally charged issue at a prestigious university. Literature, philosophy, performance, and deep human conviction--Coetzee brings all these elements into play.

As in the story of Elizabeth Costello, the Tanner Lecture is followed by responses treating the reader to a variety of perspectives, delivered by leading thinkers in different fields. Coetzee's text is accompanied by an introduction by political philosopher Amy Gutmann and responsive essays by religion scholar Wendy Doniger, primatologist Barbara Smuts, literary theorist Marjorie Garber, and moral philosopher Peter Singer, author of Animal Liberation. Together the lecture-fable and the essays explore the palpable social consequences of uncompromising moral conflict and confrontation.

High Quality - Great Price
Size: Queen, Color: Blue
Great sheets. They are soft, wash up well, fit as stated. The fabric makes it easier to make the bed. I would recommend to everyone.

Maybe a bit short on sides?
Size: King, Color: Blue Chambray
Really soft, but the sides are short for a king size bed. Plenty of length. So I’ve had to turn it sideways. Maybe it got sewn wrong?

Wish the sides were longer
Size: King, Color: Blue Chambray
I love jersey knit sheets. They are comfortable in all temperatures. These do not disappoint particularly for the cost. Unfortunately the top king size sheet is too small, with only just barely enough drop, on the sides. Length wise they are fine.

Very Comfortable but NOT As Expected for Multiple Reasons
Size: Queen, Color: Teal
I purchased my first Briarwood Home Jersey Queen Sheets June 2018 and was very pleased with the quality and how comfortable they are. The 2nd set I recently received (Oct. 2019) is VERY inferior compared to the first set. So inferior I would consider them defective. The fitted sheet is very very small and "barely" fits on my standard queen mattress regardless of which way I turn it. This was not an issue with 1st set. I have to really pull hard in order to get it to fit over my standard queen mattress. Luckily I don't have a pillow top mattress otherwise it probably would not fit at all. Plus, it's so tight the fitted sheet does not tuck under the mattress. Very surprised since the 1st set I have had no issues. Also, the flat sheet is MUCH smaller compared to first set. only about 3" hangs over side of mattress where other flat sheet hangs almost to bottom of box spring. Minor observation; the 1st set had a Briarwood Home tag on outside of pillow cases. The 2nd set does not have that tag. I also want to add that these seem thinner than the first set since I can see mattress cover through them and pillow case cover,,, but the translucent appearance could be because the 2nd set is white and the 1st set was teal. Overall VERY disappointed. I was going to order a grey set but WILL NOT due to these issues. I did email the Briarwood Home customer service today and hope they offer a resolution. NOTE: The customer service phone number goes straight to voicemail and then states the mailbox is full. This is the 2nd time I tried calling with same results so your only option is to send an email. I find that to be suspicious. I will update when I hear back,,, or don't hear back. UPDATE 2-13-2020: NEVER RECEIVED RESPONSE FROM BRIARWOOD. I WILL NEVER ORDER SHEETS FROM BRIARWOOD AGAIN. INSTEAD, SINCE THE 2ND SET OF BRIARWOOD SHEETS BARELY FIT MY STD. QUEEN BED I ORDERED ANOTHER SET OF QUEEN JERSEY COTTON SHEETS FROM: Road Trip America Cozy, T-Shirt Soft 100% Organic Cotton Jersey Knit, GOTS-Certified, Solid Color Bed Sheet Set (White, Queen). They have not arrived but I will provide a review after I receive them.
