From building a hive to harvesting honey, a top urban beekeepers shows how to keep bees the simple way. Global bee populations have been rapidly declining for years, and it’s not just our honey supply that’s at stake: the contribution of bees to the pollination of various crops is essential to human survival. But even in industrial apiaries, bees are in distress, hiving in synthetic and hostile environments. Enter idle beekeeping: the grassroots, low-intervention system that seeks to emulate the behaviour and habitat of bees in the wild-and it only requires two active days of beekeeping per year, one in the spring and another in the fall.

In The Idle Beekeeper, Bill Anderson calls upon his decades of experience as an urban beekeeper to celebrate these under-appreciated insects and show how simple and rewarding beekeeping can be. In this entertaining, philosophical, and practical guide, Anderson teaches how to build a hive system, step-by-step, developed to allow maximum idleness, harvest honey and extract honeycomb, make mead and beeswax candles, and closely observe and understand these fascinating and productive creatures. For anyone interested in keeping bees, The Idle Beekeeper is the definitive guide to getting started, even in a city, and without effort.

BILL ANDERSON An urban beekeeper and educator based in London who writes the regular beekeeping column for The Idler magazine, and his online Idle Beekeeping course is currently available from The Idler website. In the other 363 days he isn’t tending to his hives, Anderson is a television drama director, working on a huge variety of shows, including Dr. Who and Mr. Selfridge.

My picky yorkies love these
Size: 4 Inch (Pack of 2)
My small dogs took to this chew. My yorkies are constantly carrying these around, even through the doggie door. They love them.

God but..
Size: 4 Inch (Pack of 2)
My small dog loves these. None of the bones are as tough as they say. I have to change out about once a month. It gets a little pricey but they can swallow the pieces once chewed a bit.

Excellent tug toy!
Size: Large Triple, Size: Large Triple
My dog had this set of 3 interlocking rings for 7 years and they finally broke. I was so happy to be able to get a replacement set that is just as durable as the original! Just ask our Gretzky to, “get your rings” and she knows exactly what to find. She can tug these for an hour and not lose interest. She loves them. They are the perfect size for her to grab comfortably and for her human playmate to hold onto the other ring in opposition. Gretzky is half Boxer, about 85lbs and all muscle. For her first set to withstand years of tugging without breaking was surprising but they’re made well and as long as you don’t allow your dog to just sit and chew them, they’ll give you years of tugging playtime!

Simple! Easy! All We Needed!!
Size: Large Triple
These were the only durable rubber like rings that were both the same material; not too thick (not heavy) so my 1 year old Pit, Dixie, was able to latch on to one ring while we grabbed the third ring, leaving enough space so she won't accidentally bite us when grabbing the rings to play. They were also the only ones that came interlocked and cannot be taken apart. She is also a big chewer, which means she can gnaw on these without tearing them apart. The rubber is thick enough to play, but thin enough to twist and flex with her. So far, they are sturdy. She was immediately so excited! Simple and easy!
