A striking example of British mid-century modern design, this Fonseca dining table was designed by the respected furniture designer John Herbert for A Younger Ltd in the 1960s and originally retailed through Heal's. Combining elegant proportions with exceptional craftsmanship, the table perfectly captures the understated sophistication that defined British modern furniture of the period.

Crafted in beautifully grained solid teak, the table features Herbert’s characteristic minimalist styling, with softly tapered edges and a distinctive arched under-frame that provides both visual lightness and structural strength. The clean, balanced proportions allow the warmth of the teak to take centre stage, making it a timeless centrepiece for a dining room, kitchen, or open-plan living space.

With a generous length of 183 cm, the table comfortably seats six diners, with space for two chairs on either side and the option of a carver chair at each end. The slim, narrowing ends are a thoughtful design detail, allowing the table to work particularly well in narrower dining spaces while still offering a full dining surface.

One practical advantage of this design is that chairs tuck neatly under the table, allowing it to be pushed closer to a wall when not in use—ideal for modern homes where space and flexibility are important.

Condition

This table has an interesting history. It was discovered in an old barn at a country house near Bath, where it had been used as a workbench and was heavily covered in car oil. Thankfully, the structure remained sound, and it has since been carefully restored in our workshop.

The tabletop has been fully refurbished and restained, bringing the teak back to life while preserving the piece's character. It now presents beautifully and is ready to be enjoyed for many decades to come. Minor marks and signs of age remain, consistent with a genuine vintage piece.
