One of the first women's organizations to mask in a Mardi Gras parade, the Million Dollar Baby Dolls redefined the New Orleans carnival tradition. Tracing their origins from Storyville brothels and dance halls to their re-emergence in post-Katrina New Orleans, author Kim Vaz uncovers the fascinating history of the raddy-walking, shake-dancing, cigar-smoking, money-flinging ladies that strutted their way into a predominantly male establishment.

The Baby Dolls formed around 1912 as an organization for African American women who used their profits from working in New Orleans's red-light district to compete with other black women in their profession on Mardi Gras. Part of this competition involved the tradition of masking in which carnival groups create a collective identity through costuming. Their baby doll costumes--short satin dresses, stockings with garters, and bonnets--set against their bold and provocative public behavior not only exploited stereotypes but also empowered and made visible an otherwise marginalized demographic of women.

In addition to their subversive presence at Mardi Gras, the Baby Dolls helped shape the sound of jazz in the city. The Baby Dolls often worked in and patronized dance halls and honky-tonks, where they introduced new dance steps and challenged house musicians to keep up the beat. The entrepreneurial Baby Dolls also sponsored dances with live jazz bands, effectively underwriting the advancement of an art form now inseparable from New Orleans's identity.

Over time, the Baby Doll's members diverged as different neighborhoods adopted the tradition. Groups such as the Golden Slipper Club, the Gold Diggers, the Rosebud Social and Pleasure Club, and the Satin Sinners stirred the creative imagination of middle-class Black women and men across New Orleans, from the downtown Trem area to the uptown community of Mahalia Jackson.

Vaz follows the Baby Doll phenomenon through one hundred years of photos, articles, and interviews to conclude with the birth of contemporary groups such as the modern day Antoinette K-Doe's Ernie K-Doe Baby Dolls, the New Orleans Society of Dance's Baby Doll Ladies, and the Trem Million Dollar Baby Dolls. Her book celebrates these organizations' crucial contribution to Louisiana's cultural history.

Pretty shelves for small space
Size: 17 Inch, Color: Natural
Good quality shelves and easy to install once I used my own stronger anchors and screws. The ones provided were too weak and made the shelf unstable. I had to patch several holes in my wall before installing them correctly. If they had provided better quality anchors I would have rated it 5 stars. Still very happy with my purchase.

Flimsy and doesn’t hold weight
Size: 17 Inch, Color: Natural, Size: 17 Inch, Color: Natural
Do not buy this. The frame this comes with is so small and flimsy. I didn’t even have anything on the shelves yet and they were falling off the wall. The wood is a beautiful color but the quality is awful. I had different floating shelves on the same wall and I included a picture of the thick metal frame those came with, also from Amazon to show how flimsy this brand is.

Really nice shelves well-made
Size: 30 Inch, Color: Walnut, Size: 30 Inch, Color: Walnut
I recently installed a set of floating wooden shelves above my kitchen sink, and they have completely transformed the space. The natural wood grain adds warmth and character, making my kitchen feel more open and inviting. The shelves are sturdy and well-made, supporting everything from dishware to small plants and decorative items without any sagging. Installation was straightforward, with the included hardware making it easy to mount them securely. I was pleasantly surprised by how well they hold weight while maintaining a sleek, minimalistic look. The floating design gives a clean, uncluttered aesthetic, which is exactly what I was looking for. Functionally, they’ve made a huge difference. I can now keep everyday essentials like mugs and spices within easy reach while freeing up valuable counter space. They’re also a great alternative to upper cabinets, preventing the area above my sink from feeling closed in. Overall, these floating wooden shelves are both practical and stylish. Whether you’re looking to add storage or just enhance your kitchen’s design, they’re a fantastic option. I highly recommend them for anyone wanting a simple yet impactful upgrade to their space!

Look nice, not sturdy or supportive
Size: 17 Inch, Color: Dark Blue
The color and thickness of the shelf is great. Very easy to install. But the wall mount portion is cheaply made and doesn’t support the shelf as well as it should. Once mounted the shelf leans forward and isn’t sturdy. After mounting, I found my items had slid off end up on the floor.

The color is beautiful
Size: 17 Inch, Color: Dark Blue
These are beautiful! I bought them for my Grandsons Baseball room. We haven’t put them up yet. They will be a great addition to his red, white, and blue baseball room!
