HERTER, George Leonard and Berthe E.

George Leonard Herter (1911–1994)—variously described as outrageous, preposterous, bombastic, chauvinistic, outlandish, and dismissive—was an outdoor goods salesman, a prolific writer, a “surly sage, gun-toting Minnesotan and All-American crank,” and an “oddball know-it-all,” at least according to The New York Times.

Fine

You’ll get the idea pretty quickly by reading no further than the introduction to his 1964 housekeeping guide, George the Housewife…, in which he proclaims that most of the available advice is “hokum” written by condescending and conning socialites and bridge players—who are not even housewives themselves—“trying to become multi-millionaires.” Instead, take his expert advice on housewifery.

Like Herter’s popular cult classic Bull Cook (1960), George the Housewife… is abrasive and unhinged, but entertainingly so (are we laughing at him or with him?), at least for the thick-skinned. While you might glean some reasonable advice and factual information, most of the fun is in his digressive ramblings.

A sampling of free advice and complaints found within:

For the best soil to grow African violets he recommends elephant manure, but, in its absence, shredded newspaper will do
Opt for colored bed sheets over white since they don’t show as much soiling and, therefore, don’t have to be washed as often
Rotary telephones are a downgrade from operators as they force the caller to do the heavy lifting of dialing all those numbers
Do not expect a logical organization of thoughts either. The tips are likely presented in the order they occurred to the author, so you’ll find a recommendation for avoiding eye strain by wearing sunglasses right before a brief treatise on allergens and a statement on the best deodorant right after counsel on relieving morning sickness (“Morning sickness from being pregnant can be a really terrible thing. I have gone through it with my wife enough times to understand it thoroughly.”)

They're okay, but they're quite bulky.
I liked the design and overall application of these, but they don't fit my needs. They definitely work well at protecting my hands from freezing weather, but they are way too bulky for regular motorcycle use. In my opinion, I feel that these would be much more suited for a snowmobile or ATV. If you treat them as what they’re mostly designed for — ATV/snow-related riding or cold-weather utilitarian use — these gloves are a solid buy. They deliver warmth, weather protection, and decent control through the TPU windows. But if you put them on a fast street motorcycle or expect “motorcycle-glove” levels of control and feel — they’ll likely disappoint or even pose safety trade-offs. In that context, lighter and more control-oriented gloves would probably serve you better. The reason I'm docking stars is because they're marketed toward motorcycle users, and they;re very impractical. The durability seems pretty good, as I've taken them out and even had a couple of rocks/road debris hit the TPU windows with no scratches or punctures. They're not super comfortable to use at highway speeds, especially since they fit so loose, and they tend to press my front brake/clutch which is very dangerous. I personally cannot recommend this product for motorcycle use, unless you already have handguards, which will probably negate the need for these at all. Invest in some good heated gloves and/or heated grips, and I think you'll be much safer and better off in the end. For the price, I think this is a good value, but they're just not for me.

All ATV owners need these.
These gloves are fabulous. Anybody having fun on a ATV need these. With my hand warmer and these gloves, I don’t wear anything else on my hands. They are great.

handlebar mittens
Too big. If using during snow plowing they are a burden due to need to take hands off controls, and shift from forward to reverse. Might be okay if just riding around on trails, etc.

Good quality, not great on clutch
The quality of these is very good. They break the wind very well. Too well, actually. On my bike when going above 60 MPH they press hard enough on the clutch to be a problem. I'm sure I'll still use them but they won't be of any value on the interstate. It's possible to hold the clutch while using them but, for me at least, I don't have the strength to do it for my 45 minute commute. Unfortunately, the openings seem to fold up making it difficult to get gloved hands into them quickly, which is my reason for subtracting a star.
