After the release of her sublime sophomore solo album Penelope Two (HTH 105CD/LP, 2018), Penelope Trappes and Houndstooth announce Penelope Redeux, an album of top-drawer reworks of tracks from Penelope Two which showcase the intrinsic brilliance of Penelope's composition and performances and her far-reaching and all-encompassing musical influences and significance. On Penelope Redeux, Penelope Two's themes of life and death and of hope and dismay are still prevalent, brought to the surface in a myriad of ways. Mogwai stretch "Burn On" into a scorching, warbling drone that flips the original somber subtlety for grandeur and in-your-face majesty. Factory Floor member Nik Colk Void offers up a wayward, statically charged reworking of "Nite Hive" which reimagines the track's solemn beauty as a heads-down roller. Throbbing Gristle's Cosey Fanni Tutti's dystopian, avant-garde and jazz tinged electronics are deployed alongside her signature cornet to flip "Carry Me." Félicia Atkinson's rework of "Burn On" digs for the skeletal awe by stripping away many of Penelope's multi-layered effects and pushing the bare vocals to the front with manipulated field recordings. Houndstooth mainstay Throwing Snow demonstrates his ineffable brilliance, delivering an elastic-yet-powerful subdued rework of "Farewell". Jófríður Ákadóttir aka JFDR injects nimble rhythms and guitar into piano ballad "Maeve." Hidden Orchestra member Poppy Ackroyd transposes "Kismet" onto the piano, adding eerie percussive embellishments. Savages producer Jonny Hostile takes "Farewell" and utilizes the space within to add more noise and energy. Sigur Ros' musical director Paul Corley, delivers a forlorn take on "Nite Hive," whilst Swedish techno duo Aasthma (Peder Mannerfelt and Pär Grindvik) "Connector" to an entirely different realm, adding rattling drum patterns and skidding synth leads which transform the sober original to a joyous dancefloor slayer. Trappes is a London-based, Australian-born vocalist; she spent 2016 writing and recording what would become her first solo album Penelope One (OMLP 011LP, 2017) in a piano studio in East London. Composed of mostly percussion-less, reverb-heavy atmospherics with dystopian themes, the LP was released via Optimo Music. Penelope signed to Houndstooth in 2018 and released Penelope Two; the minimalist, ethereal album was built around field recordings, meditations, guitars, synth drones, piano and reverb, and deals with mortality, predestination and empathy.

One of the better food, diet, and health books available, but with significant drawbacks
Format: Kindle
Paul and Shou-Ching Jaminet present the most cogent argument in favor of ancestral-style eating that I have ever read. In fact, I never really understood the logic behind Paleo until I read Perfect Health Diet. I applaud their scientific rigor and willingness to challenge dietary dogma, Paleo or otherwise.
There is no question that removing all grains and legumes from one's diet is incredibly effective for people with autoimmune diseases and some other chronic, intractable health conditions. But when taking the evolutionary perspective on human diets it's also important to recognize that many cultures have thrived on grains and legumes for millennia, and humans have evolved some clever ways to extract nutrients from foods that would otherwise be toxic through the use of prolonged soaking, sprouting, and fermentation, all techniques that are very effective at reducing seed toxicity. I think that properly prepared grains and legumes can be a nutritious part of our diets, at least for those of us who do not suffer from autoimmunity. Stephen Guyenet has written excellent posts on legumes (wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2013/11/beans-lentils-and-paleo-diet.html) and grains (wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/search/label/lectins).
I also wish that the Jaminets had delved a little bit deeper into the subject of fatty fish from a sustainability standpoint. They recommend that we eat fatty fish, but make no mention of seafood sustainability and the importance of avoiding farmed fish, especially farmed (aka "Atlantic") salmon. Farmed fish are fed soy, corn, and pellets made of smaller fatty fish like anchovies and sardines. Entire small fish fisheries off the coast of Western South America are being destroyed in order to feed our hunger for farmed salmon, while we have plenty of small fatty fish we can eat (but choose not to) here on the west coast of North America (herring, sardines, anchovies, etc.). I bet that the fat profile (3:6 ratio) of farmed salmon is not nearly as good as that of wild salmon and smaller cold water fish.
That said, I highly respect and follow their writing and will continue to look forward to their excellent work.

Amazing life changing book! I’ve grown so much from reading this book than I have in years. It has opened my eyes to learn more about myself and others - that others have recognized that I’ve changed. I hope others discover the same impact as it has on me!

Therapist recommended
Format: Paperback
My therapist recommended this book, and I can already see why. It’s incredibly validating and insightful. It really helped me understand so many of my feelings and behaviors in a way I hadn't before. The exercises and practical advice are so helpful and feel very grounded. It's a must-read if you're working through this kind of stuff. I’m so grateful my therapist told me about it.
