The FIRST and long awaited English translation of the fifth volume of the Philokalia 5. Rich in teachings from the saints about many spiritual virtues and challenges.Translated from the original Greek. The full text! The Philokalia, which means Òthe love of the good and beautifulÓ, was compiled by St. Nikodemos of the Holy Mountain and St. Makarios of Corinth and first published in Greek in 1782 as an anthology of classic spiritual texts ranging from the 4th to the 15th century. Its rich assortment of edifying literature provides boundless wisdom and guidance regarding prayer, the soulÕs ascent to God through grace by its natural Òlove for beautyÓ, and its struggle to overcome its own passions and fragmentation. The fifth and final volume explores the central themes of the 14th century Orthodox theology of Hesychasm, relating to the life of stillness, the practice of the Jesus Prayer, and the contemplation and experience of God. It includes an Exact Rule and Method for Hesychasts, AngelikoudesÕ Chapters, full of mystical devotions and meditations on God and man, as well as the profoundly philosophical work On Union with God and the Contemplative Life. Lastly, it concludes with exhortations for all Christians to pray unceasingly, in accordance with St. PaulÕs injunction to Òpray without ceasingÓ (1 Thess. 5:17), and the Lord's declaration, ÒBe still and know that I am GodÓ (Ps. 45:11).
This edition has been translated with monks on Mount Athos who have the spiritual gifts described in this book to not just create a translation, but an accurate, living text on the Jesus Prayer. The original Greek text has many nuances that without such spiritual knowledge, can not be translated in the context that these saints wrote these practices. As such, this translation also includes the Greek words where necessary for academics and students of Theology to gain a better of understanding of the Philokalia.
