Every once in a while an incredibly talented athlete comes on the scene— in baseball that athlete would be able to run fast, throw hard, hit the ball a mile, etc. Books and movies are produced to tell the hero’s story. But what about the rest of us, the vast majority of us, who are less than talented, uncoordinated, near-sighted? Do we get a hero we can relate to?

The Unnatural tells the story of Hickey Plastow, who has absolutely no talent, but is determined to have a career playing professional baseball. Set against the backdrop of World War II, with little but an iron-willed desire to succeed, some luck, and a coach and family who believe in him, Hickey not only makes the grade, but performs beyond anyone's dreams, except his own....

This book is dedicated to every kid who's been told “you're not good enough.”

About the Author

Dave Phillips was born and raised in Doylestown, Pennsylvania in the post-war “Baby Boomer” generation. Faced with the almost certain possibility of being drafted after his college days at Villanova, he joined the US Navy as an ensign in 1974. Six years active duty, eighteen more in the reserves, he retired with the rank of Captain. As a civilian, Dave worked in manufacturing, software industry, and insurance.

He turned his lifelong woodworking hobby into a custom cabinet business. Dave had been flunked on a writing assignment by a high school teacher who claimed his work was “too good” for a high school student—he must have cheated. He hadn't, but that bad experience led to a long-standing goal that “someday” he would see if he could really succeed as a writer. Dave is happily married, living in South Florida, and father of four terrific adult children. He's an avid golfer, woodworker and fisherman. Aside from writing and golf, Dave is active in his church and community association.

The images are beautiful and horrifying
Format: Paperback
My first graphic novel. I am also a history buff. This tells the history of WWI in a simple to understand but no less thorough way. The images are beautiful and horrifying. Even my father (80) loved it. Great way to learn about history. I'll buy more graphic novels dealing with history.

Not bad
Format: Kindle
I've never read anything exactly like this before. It was mostly historical and factual. But to be honest a lot of it I didn't know about before. I know more about world war 2 than I do about world war 1. Anyway it was refreshing and new and I reccommend it.

Well put together.
Format: Kindle
Very much worth purchasing to read for a few hours. Highly recommended. Not a lot of historic graphic novels in Kindle format, and wish there were more.
