Six Questions Your Carvel Franchise Business Plan Must Answer

We built this franchise unit business plan template in Microsoft Word based on our own research into the dessert and ice cream industry. All six chapters are pre-populated with data specific to opening and operating a high-volume ice cream franchise, including startup costs like a $30,500 franchise fee and revenue projections that scale to over $1.1 million in the first year. The entire document is fully editable, so you can adapt it to your specific location and financial situation.

Question 1: What's the overall business case?

The business case is to establish a premium ice cream shop in a high-traffic, affluent town center, leveraging a nostalgic brand's recognition. The strategy focuses on modernizing the customer experience with technology and capturing the local market for celebrations, positioning the unit as a community hub for families and corporate clients.

The Bottom Line

  • Establish a premium celebration destination in a growing, high-income community.
  • Combine proven brand recognition with a modern, tech-enabled customer experience.
  • Target high-margin products like custom cakes and B2B catering to drive profitability.
[dynamic_pic9]

Question 2: What does the unit sell?

The unit primarily sells soft-serve ice cream, custom-decorated ice cream cakes, and catering packages. The business model is designed to balance high-volume daily retail sales with high-margin, pre-ordered items. This diverse revenue mix helps smooth out demand and maximizes profitability per transaction.

Core Offerings

  • Retail Soft-Serve Sales: Daily sales projected to start at $400,000 in the first year.
  • Custom Ice Cream Cakes: High-margin celebration products, forecast to generate $250,000 in year one.
  • B2B & Catering Orders: Bulk sales to corporate and community partners, launching in month three.
[dynamic_pic10]

Question 3: Who are the customers?

The primary customers are affluent young families, professionals from nearby corporate offices, and local community groups like youth sports teams. The retail store site selection plan targets a location with high foot traffic from these specific segments, ensuring a consistent stream of demand for both daily treats and larger celebration orders.

Target Segments

  • Affluent families in the immediate trade area seeking premium dessert options.
  • Corporate clients from nearby office parks requiring catering for meetings and events.
  • Local youth sports leagues and community organizations for team celebrations.
[dynamic_pic11]

Question 4: How will the unit get customers?

Customer acquisition will be driven by a combination of the franchisor's national advertising and a hyper-local marketing plan. The unit will pay a 4% marketing fee for brand-level promotion while investing $1,500 per month in local initiatives, including social media campaigns, community partnerships, and direct outreach to build a B2B sales pipeline.

Go-to-Market Plan

  • Leverage a 4.0% marketing fee for national brand awareness and campaigns.
  • Execute local social media marketing to target families and community events.
  • Build direct B2B relationships with corporate offices and youth sports leagues.
[dynamic_pic12]

Question 5: Who runs the business?

The franchise unit will be led by an on-site owner-operator or a dedicated Store Manager with an annual salary of $65,000. The initial staffing plan includes an Assistant Manager, skilled Cake Decorators, and Crew Members, totaling approximately 11.3 full-time equivalents (FTEs) in the first year to ensure smooth operations and adherence to brand standards.

Operating Team

  • An experienced Store Manager ($65,000 salary) to oversee daily operations.
  • Specialized Cake Decorators to execute high-quality, custom cake orders.
  • Staffing scales from 11.3 FTEs in Year 1 to support projected sales growth.
[dynamic_pic13]

Question 6: What are the key financials?

The financial model projects a significant initial investment, driven by a $280,000 build-out and $130,000 in equipment costs. The unit is forecast to achieve break-even within 4 months of opening and deliver a full payback in 4 years. This performance is defintely dependent on hitting a Year 1 revenue target of $1,125,000 and maintaining cost discipline.

Financial Snapshot

  • Startup Costs: Key investments include a $30,500 franchise fee and $280,000 for leasehold improvements.
  • Performance: Projects Year 1 EBITDA of $205,000 on $1,125,000 in revenue.
  • Profitability: Aims for breakeven by April 2026 and a full investment payback within 4 years.

Piece of Junk
Style: ET-5150, Set: ET PRO FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
This printer worked fine until about a week ago. It jammed six paper jambs in a row, and then it did not recognize the 8.5x11 paper that I had been using from day one. The copy feeder on top of the printer quit, and when it did work, it fed the copy in almost sideways. I have a box of ink for this copier, and I would like to shove it back to the supplier for the wonder piece BS equipment. I have bought a black ink cartage for my nearly 8-year-old Brother Copier and my office is back in business. Epson ECOTANK Pro ET-5150 is not ready for prime time by a cartage machine.

Great printer, save money on ink; Most issues are very easy to fix
Style: ET-5150, Set: ET PRO FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
I convinced my boss to buy my first 5150 about 3 years ago and our second one earlier this year. I am happy with my purchase. I have barely had to swap out the maintenance box, and they are cheap anyways. The print quality is quite good, just need to run some cleaning protocols to fix most of them. We did have to open up a printer for some deeper cleaning but there were videos online to fix it. The most common issue is paper jams, but I print a lot and its pretty rare if the paper isn't janky. You can also easily fix by pulling the printer forward and taking off a panel in the back to fish out paper.

Good value
Style: ET-5150, Set: ET PRO FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
I think 3.5 would be about right. I had a Canon color laser printer that I loved! The problem was that after 6 years it started to need name brand toner at $45/each. I decided to co for something that would print cheaper, because it turns out I don't print as much as I used to, so having a commercial printer is no needed. I like the tanks a lot and they are super easy to fill. The first fill does not use a whole bottle, but then it settles and the next day you can top off the tanks with the rest of the bottle. The print quality is good. I have printed a few hundred pages and it is working as it should, and the tanks don't seem to have dropped but a touch. Much cheaper than toner for sure. The weird thing is that when you scan, it does not know that there is paper in the feeder, so you hear the flat bed scanner run first, and then the tray starts feeding. Also, it prints on both sides, but it does not scan both sides automatically with the feeder, you have to flip each sheet. This is a serious bummer for me as I do a lot of 2-sided scanner. So far so good. If things go south I will revise.

18 months and going strong
Style: ET-5150, Set: ET PRO FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN, Style: ET-5150, Set: ET PRO FAX/ADF/PRINT/COPY/SCAN
Edit 1/18/26: 2 years in, and I just topped off the ink. I used the extra bottle of black that came with it, and bought a set of color ink for the first time. Love it. Original: I’ve had this printer for 18 months and love it. I haven’t even had to refill the ink yet! I print a fair amount, not constantly, but I homeschool and print things for church and scouts also. I’m able to connect easily from my Windows laptop, Mac desktop, and iPhone. Automatic double sided printing is great. Color printing is good quality. Printing on card stock can get jammed, but there’s a rear bypass for that. It’s annoying that you have to do a single sheet at a time, but oh well. Copying and scanning is handy.
